What’s the Box Office Trend Early in 2022?

We are past the holiday season (and we hope all of you got through it safely and healthy), and we are looking at almost 10 more months of 2022...so where do we stand?

Well, let’s look at the glass as being half full. In one year according to boxofficemojo.com, cumulative box office receipts from January 2021 versus January 2022 show a nearly 500 percent increase! January 2021 at $65,138,132 and $389,477,195 for January 2022.

For January 2022, Spider-Man: No Way Home ruled the box office with $163,815,488 in domestic gross receipts, followed by Scream, Sing 2, The King’s Man, and The 355 (respectively).

What are receipts this February compared to the past two Februarys? 2020 cumulative box office receipts equaled $638,097,308 for the month, while 2021 came in at just $57,746,920. As of Feb. 22, 2022, box office receipts this month have already well surpassed 2021’s total monthly numbers at $277,411,150…that’s an increase of nearly 400% with seven days still to go!

The new hot 2022 release is Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, about street-smart Nathan Drake, who is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter, Victor "Sully" Sullivan, to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada. After just three days since its opening, Uncharted has grossed more than $51,000,000 putting it in the top spot for 2022 box office releases already.

Other top features released in February 2022 (to date) include Jackass Forever ($47,708,627), Death on the Nile ($26,234,032), Dog ($18,011,000), Moonfall ($17,943,483), and Marry Me ($17,432,665), while Spider-Man: No Way Home still holds the #3 spot this month ($35,140,429 in February; $771,440,686 since its launch in December).

Even during the current pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home just surpassed Avatar’s $760.5 million to become the third highest domestic grosser of all time!

For March, the big draw will be The Batman, scheduled for a wide release on March 4. When the Riddler, a sadistic serial killer, begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.

Any pessimist can say that we are not back to pre-pandemic levels yet, but we must consider that we are trending back to those numbers, and not necessarily slowly as the aforementioned numbers show.
