Black Friday, Black Panther & Black Adam Rule November

Traditionally, the day after Thanksgiving, known as “Black Friday”, is the biggest consumer sales day in the United States. Besides Black Friday, November 2022 has been a month draped in black, as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has taken in an impressive $367,670,596 as of Nov. 28 since its release Nov. 11. Black Adam is #2 for the month to date, grossing $50,084,215 and $159,623,000 since its Oct. 21 release.

The Clooney/Roberts rom-com Ticket to Paradise ($30,500,330), comedy/horror The Menu ($18,670,443), and Disney’s animated Strange World ($18,600,000) round out the month’s Top 5.

On the bright side of things, November 2022 ($610,506,370) has significantly outperformed November 2021 ($523,343,646), but, to date, is still well below pre-pandemic November 2019 ($959,213,976).

For the year, 2022 sits at $6,672,437,842 with a little more than a month to go, outperforming 2021’s $4,482,795,864. Each year between 2015-2019 were above the $11B threshold, so, unfortunately, 2022 will end significantly below pre-pandemic’s recent annual averages.

Will the much anticipated 3D Avatar: The Way of Water and a string of holiday movie releases help end 2022 on a high note and successfully bring in 2023? Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the 3+ hour Avatar: The Way of Water, scheduled for a Dec. 16 release, begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

As of this month, boxofficepro.com’s long range box office forecast predicts that Avatar: The Way of Water will bring in upwards of $175,000,000 domestically on its first weekend, and approximately as much as a $720,000,000 domestic total…below the original 2009 of $749,766,139 domestic (unadjusted for inflation). However, since its release in 2009 and with subsequent re-releases domestically and internationally since, Avatar has pocketed $2.802 billion USD

worldwide.
