CES+: What would you say makes Severtson Screens most attractive to its customers?
DM: The quality of our finished product! We have a rich history going back 35 years. This has provided a lot of experience and time to create the excellent quality of our optical coatings that we are known for throughout the industry, including our folded screen capabilities which saves in shipping costs.
CES+: Why do you consider CES+ to be a great partner to Severtson?
DM: CES+'s desire to provide the very best cinema services and products, and we work well together and enjoy each other's company! There have been many "spit-ball" conversations about what could or should be getting done in the industry. We try to identify the need and then get to work on how to solve that problem. Alex and the entire CES+ team are a pleasure to work with.CES+: Why do you consider the quality of the cinema screen to be as important as the quality of the speakers and projector when it comes to providing the overall cinematic experience desired by those that created the movies themselves?
DM: All of these components are equally important. If one of these components is flawed, it can ruin the experience for the patron. The screen is a tricky one though because the patron is literally staring at the screen for the entirety of the experience. If there is a blemish or other problem with the screen, it will distract the viewer and detract from the immersive experience.CES+: With trade shows opening back up in person after the past two years of COVID, what are you most looking forward to when exhibiting at these shows?
DM: We are definitely looking forward to reconnecting with our friends in the industry throughout the world. After COVID, many people are still afraid or now are just out of the habit of "going to the movies". We have to collectively step up our game if we are going to win back the audience and bring them back to the theatre.CES+: 3D is seemingly making a comeback, especially with the new Avatar movie release later this year. What screens and technologies does Severtson offer for theatres to consider when playing such movies?
DM: For passive 3D systems, Severtson Screens offers the traditional silver screen with our SeVision 3D-GX. This was the coating that we originally developed for IMAX many years ago. We have since enhanced this coating so that it can be folded for better shipping and handling. We have also developed an additional passive 3D screen coating known as our SeVision 3D GX-WA. This screen responds more like a white screen offering wider angles and less hot-spotting. We also provide 3D screens for Active 3D systems. All of our 3D screens are available in a broad range of gains and perforation options.CES+: Arizona, USA has always been Severtson’s home since it was founded in the 1980s. Why have you kept your company’s roots in the ground in the area for so long?
DM: The short answer is, We love it here! Our ability to fold all of our screens allows us to ship anywhere from one location, rather than having facilities in various locations and countries.CES+: On a personal level, what’s your favorite all-time movie?
DM: That's a tough one because I like watching all kinds of movies, but I'd probably have to go with Jason Bourne! I'm a sucker for anything with spies, car chases, and guns.
